Malaysia Heat Wave - Sabah and Peninsular
#1

As of March 25, 2024, Malaysia is grappling with a severe heatwave and drought, particularly affecting regions such as Kedah, Perak, Perlis, and the Papar District in Sabah. The soaring temperatures coupled with minimal rainfall have raised significant concerns regarding public health and water scarcity. The Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM) has reported 28 cases of heat-related illnesses, Kedah (8), Perak (7), Selangor (3), Negeri Sembilan (3), Sabah (3), Perlis (2), Johor (1), Pahang (1). While the Papar District in Sabah has been officially declared a drought disaster area, impacting around 150,000 residents.

In response to the crisis, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) teams have been deployed to assess available water sources and initiate relief efforts. However, operational challenges such as communication issues and inadequate storage infrastructure have impeded progress. Despite these obstacles, the WASH team in Papar has successfully produced 6,360 litres of potable water for distribution, providing much-needed relief to affected villages and institutions.
